At 5:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16th, sixteen RRT volunteers headed to Elm Creek Regional Park in Maple Grove, MN for the Purple Ride & Stride event. The Purple Ride & Stride events are among the largest sources of funding for pancreatic cancer. This event raised over $325,000 of the much-needed funds to fight this deadly disease. Those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have about a 5-year survival rate.
The event includes a 50-mile, 25-mile, and 8-mile bike ride as well as a 5K run and a family friendly walk. There is activities for children, music, and refreshments. RRT has helped with this event the last three years in Minnesota. One of the organizers mentioned that there would be 68 survivors attending this event which was the highest number of survivors they’ve ever had!
These events raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, and bring supporters & families together to help raise funds towards the goal to double the survival rate by 2020. Currently, the survival rate is at about 9%.
During the course of the event, RRT volunteers helped with the parking and handing out water bottles and snacks. At the close of the event, the work continued with all the cleaning and packing up. Overall the day was a success, and many were very appreciative of RRT volunteers’ efforts.
